The purpose of palliative and hospice care at Auburn Village is to provide comfort, pain and symptom management as well as emotional support.
What is Palliative and Hospice Care?
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. A multidisciplinary team of staff focuses on providing patients with relief from the pain, symptoms, and stress of a serious illness whether the illness is curable, chronic, or life-threatening. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.
Hospice care is palliative care, pain management, and comfort for those who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness (6 months or less life expectancy).
Who Should Participate in Palliative or Hospice Care?
Patients who may benefit from these services may include seniors who are experiencing chronic, progressive pulmonary disorders, renal disease, chronic heart failure and progressive neurological conditions.
Hospice care is a specific type of palliative care for people who likely have less than 6 months to live. Hospice care is a good option for loved ones that have seen an increase in pain, nausea, breathing distress, or other symptoms. Your loved one might be having trouble “bouncing back” after a medical set-back or may even be emotionally withdrawn. Oftentimes, your physician is the first to mention the possibility of hospice care. When a doctor mentions hospice care, he or she is simply presenting an option for comfort so that your loved one can have a higher quality of life in the time remaining.
